A day in the city and the dangers of earbuds. Today, on the platform at 103rd St, a 20 something came bounding down the steps in her summer dress. Right behind her came an individual with some issues using choice language, and she never heard him. As they both walked by me, he began to ask out loud what are you wearing under that dress and used a stream of profanities asking to see what she had on. Everyone sat silently and she heard nothing, as she was listening to her iTunes playlist, and proceeded towards the end of the platform where no one was. Everyone ignored the obvious unfolding situation. I looked around and saw everyone sitting, doing nothing, and I wondered, is this a tv show or real life. I decided to get involved and put myself between the two. She had no clue what was going on. I had to intervene twice to get her onto the subway with the boys and me and away from this person. She thanked me as she exited at 86th. Lesson learned, watch your surroundings and dont count on the public to help, and take the headphones out. Others on the platform said I did what was right and they wanted to help to, but didnt. Maybe I was in the right place at the right time. I think too many have a safe sense of security regardless of where we live or roam and we need to always watch whats around us.
