A day in the life of a road sister, or, why we never get to where - TopicsExpress

A day in the life of a road sister, or, why we never get to where were staying before 10pm. 8am: wake up, shower, pack. Ready to go by 8:30am. Wait for Carrie as she stumbles disoriented through her morning routine. (One of is a morning person. The other, not so much.) 9am: Free hotel breakfast! (Its more or less the same everywhere weve stayed, and not that exciting, but its free, and therefore exciting anyway.) 9:30am: On the road! Carrie is chomping at the bit to visit Churchill Downs, so despite the fact we had a relatively late night in Nashville, shes got us on a non-leisurely agenda, and this is about the earliest weve gotten going any day this week. Estimated arrival in Louisville: noon. 11am/12pm: lose an hour due to time zone change even though Louisville is due north of Nashville. New ETA in Louisville: 1pm. Carrie discovers Kentucky Bourbon Trail spots in tour book. Its Sunday, so most arent open past 4pm except one, but we think we can catch it. 12:30pm: collectively acknowledge a need for a restroom but decide we dont want to stop since well be there in a half hour. 12:38pm: The need is now urgent. We take the next exit which is somehow the most remote, most bucolic state road in all of Kentucky, that finally deposits us at a gas station 9 miles later. New ETA in Louisville: 1:45pm. (Had we stayed on highway we would have passed a roadside gas station in precisely 2 miles.) 2pm - 4pm: Churchill Downs. Its truly a great little museum and tour dedicated to the Kentucky Derby. But seriously, how is it 4pm? 4-4:15pm: Furiously google bourbon trail spots to see if theres any hope besides the suspiciously named Evan Williams Experience in downtown Louisville. Give up. 4:15pm: Realize we never ate lunch. Forego downtown Louisville in favor of a scenic drive on a smaller state road toward Frankfort, KY, which a lady in Santa Fe told us was particularly charming. 4:15 - 5:30pm: 1 hour of strip malls and 15 minutes of scenic horse farms later, arrive Frankfort. 5:30-5:45: blindly drive through the Sunday evening ghost town that is Frankfort. Eventually decide to use GPS to navigate to a riverside seafood restaurant listed in Triple A book. Come to dead end. Realize GPS is mysteriously set to biking directions. 5:45pm-7pm: lunch. Southern fried catfish and hush puppies. Yum! 7pm - present: on the road toward Charleston, WV. ETA: 9:45pm. Compose next great American Facebook status update.
