A dear friend and fellow artist (brilliant I might add) has become incredibly disillusioned because the majority of artists out there are using shortcut methods (I call them cheating methods) to do work that sells for astronomical prices, without disclosing their shortcut methods for the finished product. I wholeheartedly feel the same way. If the art is not done entirely from the skilled hand and eye, then it is NOT done from a skilled hand and eye. PERIOD!! Tracing (Im not talking about from something youve already freehand drawn, to put it on another canvas/paper etc) gridding and projecting an image onto your canvas/paper etc ... equals shortcut.....> cheating. I dont care if you disagree. This is a heartfelt, moral, and ethical issue. Cheaters will always give an excuse why they have the right to grid, trace, project etc etc etc. If its not done b y hand, then it is not skill. And dont give me the renaissance bullshit either. It is proven that the what seems to be perfect proportions to the natural eye in Renaissance paintings, when measured is found to be out, by quite a measure. The camera obscura was NOT used in the way that people cheat nowadays. If you cheat, then make it known that you used methods other than freehand drawing to achieve the results. You have no right to be judged along with artists who do use their eye and hand, through labour, through time, years of skill gaining work. I expect to have many jump up and down with excuses. Pffffft to that. No excuses. If you cant do the work by hand from the very beginning to the very end and need to trace, grid, project or whatever other cheat method there is, then you dont deserve to get the credit or credibility a true FREEHAND artist deserves. Remember this is MY page and I DO freehand from start to finish. Rant over.
