A dear friend of mine started to fill an application form to study - TopicsExpress

A dear friend of mine started to fill an application form to study for a masters degree in a school in the U.S.A. And, on the form, she was told that international applicants whose first language is English, would be exempted from undergoing the test of English walaha. Of course, my friend whose first and ONLY language is English, already took this as a waiver. She would later discover that her application wasnt processed because she hasnt submitted the TOEFL result. When she discussed this with me, I told her not to write any nonsense test of English. She should, instead, write the Admission Office, telling them of her fluency in the language. And that, the medium of instruction used in her undergrad classes was English! She wrote the Admission Office. And, heres the response she got: Dear Ms. O Your question regarding TOEFL has been referred to me. Please be advised that Nigerian applicants (as well as applicants from other Anglophone countries with medium of instruction in English such as India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kenya, Ghana, etc.) must submit a score on the TOEFL or IELTS in order to be considered for admission. In the case of Nigeria, though English is the medium of instruction in the classroom, upon departure Nigerian students then return to their chosen language of everyday discourse which includes Yoruba, Ibo, Hausa, Fulani, and many others. Upon receipt of a score report from TOEFL or IELTS, our office will move forward in the processing of your application for graduate study. Whew. I no know wetin I wan say again. Hear this; upon departure Nigerian students then return to their chosen language of everyday discourse which includes Yoruba, Ibo, Hausa, Fulani, and many others. Chaaai! (Apologies to Patience Jonathan).
