A different look at President Ellen Johnson Resignation - TopicsExpress

A different look at President Ellen Johnson Resignation Call Firstly, I will appreciate us understanding the definition and concept of democracy. The best and commonly use definition of democracy is the Abraham Lincoln’s definition which states” Democracy is a government of the people, by the people and for the people”. Undoubtedly, this definition entails that under a democratic system of governance, power lies in the hands of the people. The people democratically elect their leaders without fear, favor or intimidation. Throughout this process, there isn’t phrase or sentence as you read along that resembles selection of leaders. Under this system of governance, the majority rules while the minority follows. However, because of the free nature of democracy, both the majority and minority have equal rights that should be protected at all time. I have listened to segments of Liberians both nationally and internationally calling on President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to resign. I agree that it is your right as Liberian citizens. I have read the many reasons you guys have outlined as appropriate for the president to resign. However, are you guys using the best method to achieve your objectives? The big answer is NO. Resignation wouldn’t help here because the same agenda Ellen Johnson Sirleaf implementing, Joseph Boakia mostly like will continue from there. Hence, if Ellen resigns, soon Joseph too will resign. Probably, Alex Tyler too could resign just after Boakai. So you see why the call for resignation is useless to me? Hence, it will be good for you guys to change the tactics and stand a better chance for the next elections. Speaking of ills in society is good. However, it will be best to recommend ways forward on solving those ills than just speaking. All I see left, right and center is a call for the resignation of the President and not recommendations for improvement or solving the many problems identified. If you read most of my writings, I identify the ills, speak with facts, offer pieces of advice and make recommendations to the government for improvement. As to whether my recommendations are taken into consideration is none of my business. For all I know, I have played my part as a good citizen. Regularly, we all need to be a good citizen. A good citizen is a person that sees not only the wrong, but advance plans to the government to transforms these wrongs into right. Oppositions are like fans and coach of a team. You guys see all the wrongs of the players on the field. Particularly for a coach, it is incumbent upon you to change things around for the fans and team. Hence, the same is with those that identify the ills in society. You guys must learn to put forth recommendations for improvement. By doing this, you guys are positively selling yourselves to the Liberian people, promoting the image of your party, and setting the stage to take over from President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf rather than sending reckless call for resignation. Let us not believe that the role of the minority is just to identify the ills and speak on them. It is the equal right of every citizen to contribute to the development of the state. In America that we look up to for everything, I can tell you for free that one of the major positive contributors to the government is the Republican Party. The Party is not only identifying ills in the government, but advancing recommendations to the government for improvement. To me, this is just one of the many sweet natures of the concept of democracy. Hence, inasmuch as calling on the president to resign is a good thing in the eyes of the callers; I think it will be the best thing to help in solving the many problems. These are the things that are holding back African democracies. Oppositions only feel that their role is to identify the ills in society and speak out loudly. Again, I say a big No. It is the real role of opposition to help preserve the dignity of the state by positively contributing to achieving the overall objective of the people which they hope to lead someday. Like we normally say, “Good is never lost”. When you help someone in achieving their objectives today, some will help you in achieving yours tomorrow. I think it is time we all start to see things from a positive perspective. Have a nice day folks.
