A double nickel kid….Born in 1955 I remember the first time I saw the Wizard of Oz on a color TV.... My sisters and I were absolutely amazed when it switched from black and white to color.... You opened your soda cans with the pointed end of a bottle opener.... Coca-Cola came in a small bottle and when you bought one from the coke box once you started out with it you couldnt stop because the machine would lock up and keep it.... it cost a dime.... Milk magically showed up on your front porch with a paper top in a glass bottle....ABC...NBC....CBS..... Were your channels for TV...... Rabbit ears with tin foil to improve the signal.... Buck Rogers ray gun and he Outer Limits were pretty scary and just when you thought you were safe you had just entered the Twilight Zone…”dodododododo”….Ed Sullivan had the Beatles on to introduce them to America…JKF was shot in Dallas….I was in Miss Landrums 3rd grade class….John Glenn was placed in a capsule stuck on the top of a solid fuel rocket and sent into space to orbit the earth…I saw my first Clint Eastwood spaghetti western at the Avon Theater on Broadway street West Memphis…My family car was a Cream color 1962 Plymouth Fury station wagon with push buttons on the dash for the automatic transmission and a lever on the dash to place it into Park…We had two window unit air conditioners for the sweltering heat of summer….and an exhaust fan in the hallway with the louvers that opened when you turned it on that we used when fall came around….We painted the house by hand every summer….and cut the grass along the fence and house with a pair of manual hand clippers….I had a sting ray bicycle with a banana seat….that I rode to school everyday with no lock and saddle bags to carry my books….baseball was the only little league organized sport available…..I still have my baseball glove my dad bought me at nine years old for my first little league try out …. I was thrilled that I made the team until I figured out everyone that showed up made the team but the players that had the uniforms that the shirt that actually matched the pants were going to dominate the playing time….. These are just some of the things that happened before I turned ten years old…..it is fun to me and amazing at the same time to recollect some of the changes I have seen in my life time….I will continue with this at a later date starting from 1965….. hope you enjoyed………………………..Rjr
