A dozen years or so ago, I decided to let a Black Walnut volunteer grow , even though it was too close to the house. As you probably know Black Walnuts are quite sizable and need room to spread their branches, but the little fellow was so persistent, I just had to let him grow. As he grew I pruned the lower branches up to about 20 feet, so from a distance he resembles a Palm tree. That pleases my simple mind immensely. Now he is about 35 tall and taller than our modest 2 story house. This is most rapid growth , but perhaps the volunteer which I permitted to live had a root system that is much older. We have an abundance of nuts, and if you would like a sample for planting, let me and I will supply you. But do remember they need room.
