A familiar challenge: Texas schools need to fill void left by oil boom CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — Several southeast Texas school districts say theyre having staffing problems because of the Eagle Ford Shale oil boom. The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports that schools in Alice, Pettus, Three Rivers and Freer say they are losing qualified staff because of wage competition and housing shortages. School officials say the oil boom in Corpus Christi has lured employees into the lucrative business. The Alice Independent School District still has to fill 21 teaching positions before classes start in about two weeks. Experts say drilling in the Eagle Ford Shale has also worsened existing housing shortages, especially in Alice. A housing study conducted last year found that the city needs to add nearly 950 housing units within the next five years to address the problem.
