A fantastic day was celebrated yesterday in Berrigan with a wonderful turn out to honour our great achievers in the Shire. The following are our winners for this year. Citizen of the Year - Bradley Carlon Brad has achieved a high level of regard in the emergency services which he has been involved in for over 20 years. Holding a number of executive positions in both the Search & Rescue Squad and Rural Fire Brigade. Brad was squad captain in both services and has shown exemplary service. His leadership has contributed to the beautification of the Finley Lake and the surrounds which are a great asset to Finley He has been part of the Finley Health Advisory Committee for 10 years, a team that have worked hard to improve the health of the community. He is currently involved in many community groups including the Finley Farmers Market, Tocumwal Foreshore Committee and Finley Football Club to name a few. Young Citizen of the Year - Chelsea Dempster Chelsea gives her very best effort to every activity she undertakes. She has an outstanding academic record and works quietly behind the scenes tirelessly to improve opportunities for the students at Finley High School. She has been selected to be an Australian Youth Ambassador for an aid organisation called HOPE:Global. She has recently travelled to Rwanda volunteering to assist in schools, orphanages and helping widows. Along the way she has learnt leadership, communication and team building skills which she used in her role as Student Representative Council representative year 10. She has also represented the school in public speaking and debating and gives her time as an Active After School Communities coach. Chelsea also has recently been awarded the Melbourne University Kwong Lee Dow scholarship for 2015. Sportsperson of the Year - Leah Pate Leah received the A Grade Netball Best and Fairest Medal for the north west Picola league in 2014. She was also Tocumwal’s A Grade Netball Best and Fairest medal winner. Leahs contribution towards junior development for the young girls in Tocumwal is a constant reminder of what a great asset Leah is to the community. Leah also assists in coaching and training juniors in the local Netta program which encourages health and fitness in the community. She has also coached A Grade and under 17 teams, has won 3 best and fairest for A Grade and played in 3 grand finals. Junior Sportsperson of the Year - Steffanie Vogel Steffanie has an outstanding and dedicated golf record. During 2014 she was 3rd in the Victorian foursome, 2014 Edna O’Brien Open winner represented Goulburn Valley in the Country Team. 2014 Goulburn Valley Ladies District Champion, 2014 Barham Ladies Open runner up, member of the Golf Victoria squad, won the Kay Moylon Shield as well as Kingswood Pennant team runner up in Division 2. Steffanie fits golf commitments in and around school homework, exams and commitments as well as travelling to tournaments. She practices 2-3 times a week and on most days of school holidays. Community Organisation of the Year - Barooga Advancement Group Barooga Advancement Group was established in 1998 and is a community based Committee conducting monthly meetings. Over the years the Committee has been committed to such things as the beautification of the Barooga main street, assisted with the construction of the swing bridge over the lagoon and provides quarterly editions of the Barooga Bulletin. The Committee have also established the 4 Seasons markets on the foreshore, Carols by Candlelight which are held in the Botanical Gardens, helped establish a new walking track around the town and prepared Barooga for the Tidy Towns judging which took out 1st place in its category. This group is doing an outstanding job in trying to promote tourism and generally striving to make Barooga an even better place to live than it already is.
