A fantastic exhibition on at St Olaves (the church at the top of Fore Street) at teh moment called Re Interpretation. The artists have really thought about this largely ignored sacred space at the noisy heart of the city, and responded to it with some personal, imaginative and thought-provoking work in a variety of mediums, which fits in perfectly amongst the icons, stone columns and arches, organs and altarpieces. Explorations of fairytales, pill-filled perspex crosses as symbols of suffering, pop art prayer boards, reflections on the history of place and the people who have passed through and by, representations of the sacred and profane which exist in such close proximity here. This is just wonderful stuff, such a worthy (but not remotely dull) use of the church. Clare Heaton, Ruth Carpenter, Katie Scott Hamilton, Judy Harington, Karen Tarr and my friend Steve Brown can be proud of what theyve achieved here. And Ive come away with my St Olaf relics. Its on tomorrow from 10 til 4. Do go and have a look if youre in town.
