A fantastic long read Ive been meaning to share for a while. Its about how the Internets recollection of the couch incident and its role in the implosion of Tom Cruises image, is largely an exaggeration. Ive always defended the biggest movie stars, especially those of the late 20th century written off today as blandly vacant, aging has-beens or tabloid pariahs -- Reeves, Schwarzenegger, etc. Which is why it frustrates me when people knock on films based on Tom Cruises presence in it. More importantly, it presents the fact that the trajectory of Tom Cruises star is far more impressive than we allow ourselves to recognize. His star rose throughout the 80s and 90s through a streak of daring dramas, and continues to persevere in science fiction thrillers in spite of the couch. That moviegoers still point to the couch and enter it into consideration regarding his merits as an actor and appraising the watchability of his films only speaks to a level of ignorance that undermines their credibility as self-professed cinephiles.
