A fantastic read. A crucial component of any joke or narrative can be found in who exactly is doing the telling. Until the underlying conditions depriving so many from being able to laugh together are addressed, a very sizable portion of the population will continue to have no honorable means of ever being Charlie. Exactly. The dogma of freedom of speech and expression assumes that there are no power relations - that equal opportunity offenders offend equally, ignoring how at the core of any expression is a dynamic of power play. Theres a reason why Ive seen overwhelmingly white journalists, in particular, pound their chests to the beat of Je Suis Charlie while overwhelmingly POC journalists have pushed back and said that no, we can never be Charlie.
