A few areas across Northern Indiana are seeing a bit of snow this - TopicsExpress

A few areas across Northern Indiana are seeing a bit of snow this evening but unfortunately this storm was nearly impossible to forecast. If it tells you anything the National Weather Service Chicago had Winter Weather Advisories in effect for Northeastern Illinois including Chicago for up to 6 of snow with this storm and the city got no snow whatsoever. While the first thing people say when a snow event doesnt happen is that forecasters hyped the storm. Well first and foremost all forecasters across Illinois and Indiana were trying to be conscious that hundreds of thousands of people would be traveling over the Holidays which meant that plenty of warning about the potential snow event was needed. Unfortunately our forecast models were just awful when it came to tracking this storm. They showed the storm being quite strong and showed tracks from Illinois to New York just as recently as a day ago. Ultimately a weak storm tracked through Ohio and with little cold air to work with almost no snow fell on the cold side of the storm except for parts of Michigan. Secondly I would ask you to go through and look at our previous forecasts and posts. At no point did we call for a snow storm and at no point did we say snow was guaranteed. We knew that there was considerable uncertainty with this storm system which is why we tried to be conservative in our forecasting of this storm from the beginning. We arent trying to dodge the fact that our forecast (along with most others) was just awful, and we know its even more disappointing since we were forecasting snow just in time for Christmas, but we wanted to take time to tell you what happened with the forecast and why it was just so bad. For you snow lovers the pattern continues to look favorable through January for several snow events. Can we pinpoint them yet? No. Can we tell you what areas of Indiana and Ohio will receive the snow? Not yet. But we can say the pattern looks like a winter pattern that supports snow & cold. But the most important thing is that we hope you all reach your Christmas destinations safely. We hope you all enjoy the Christmas Holiday with your family, with your friends and with your loved ones. And we appreciate all of your support of IndianaWeatherOnline. Our goal is always to provide the most accurate forecast possible and to give you all as much notice of inclement weather as possible. And each and everyday we will continue to work hard to provide all of you with the best weather information possible. Again Merry Christmas! And remember that Christmas is more than presents, its more than gifts. So cherish the time with your family, friends and those you love - Brandon
