A few comments based on questions were getting today: There ARE other Lake Erie water utilities dealing with this ice right now. They just dont have Facebook pages and havent needed to issue an alert yet, so no one knows about it. Avon Lake Regional Water is all about transparency. Hope you dont mind. The short-term fixes we implemented have allowed us to continue providing water to our customers for about 3 days while dealing with the lake trying to freeze. Wind and weather patterns have sent slush to our intakes since Thursday. This is not normal. Last year, we asked for conservation within about 12 hours and entered into a state of emergency within 24. At this point, we are only asking for voluntary conservation. It does seem weird to have two years of lake ice in a row. But consider the weather. Not usual. We cant forsee the future, but we are planning for these temperatures to happen more often than they used to. You know weve implemented our short-term fixes for handling Lake Erie ice. There are longer-term ones as well. The fact is, we have to pass all expenses on to you, so we are very careful about weighing risk vs. reward vs. likelihood of weather like this. Based on the changing climate, were feeling good about the long-term fixes weve identified, including additional water storage. Work starts on that this year. Keep your comments and questions coming. But if you dont mind, well be answering them tomorrow.
