A few days after pK I saw Oh My God (OMG). Both are similar in their concern and both are most forgettable. Hirani had raised hopes with his earlier films, therefore pK was more disappointing – a string of gags about superstition, some brilliant logic about some obvious stuff etc., these movies do not even skim the surface of what religion is all about. Im not here to be an apologist for the religious person. To each their own. For me religion and art are very similar for they touch us in places where nothing else can. Nanak, Meera, Kabir, Tukaram come to us in exquisite verses. Dagar sahab began all his dhrupad renditions after invoking Brhama. People who kill in the name of religion are not religious people. They have been prompted to do so by money and political formations but mainly money. I grew up in an atheist family but my grandfather was deeply religious. He was the first real sufi I saw. His strict code of conduct and behaviour were meant only for himself, with others he was most liberal and would never judge them by their set of beliefs. Many times I get myself embroiled in a contest between science and religion and I hit myself for it because actually these are not the opposites. There are, of course, crooks on all sides of the divide but the opposite of a scientific person is one who doesnt want to see reality as it is. The opposite of a religious person is one who is disconnected with the ethos of this land, its soil, air, vegetation, its very life blood.
