A few days ago, Prof Susan Blackmore gave an introductory lecture at Oxford University to two hundred young people which included items on evolution, memes and religion as a prime example of the meme complex. (memes are the cultural equivalent of genes). Within a short space of time, around a hundred of them had got up and left. When questioned by Blackmore, some replied you are offending us, so were leaving.. Mosty of those leaving were young Muslims, and they were clearly unable to contemplate any views - eg evolution - which ran contrary to their religious narrative. This is very sad, for some of these young people may go on to become doctors. Geneticist and tv presenter Prof Steve Jones, who teaches student doctors at University College, London, says that the Muslim student contingent regularly leave his lectures when evolution crops up. And some have even producede leaflets saying that evolution is a lie and handed them out to members of the public...! What a nasty, invidious and insidious meme is religion...!
