A few days ago marked the 50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones’ initial release of Time is On My Side The song was composed by Jerry Ragovoy under the pseudonym Norman Meade and had previously been released as the B-side of singles from a couple of different artists. The song initially had only the lyrics Time is on my side and Youll come running back....to me as it was composed for jazz trombonist Kai Winding and his orchestra. Winding had expressed an interest in going in a more mainstream direction with his music to his arranger who in turn contracted his friend and colleague Ragovoy to write such a tune. The recording session was produced by Creed Taylor and included Cissy Houston, Dee Dee and Dionne Warwick as background vocalists. It was released as the B-side on Windings Verve single Baby Dont Come on With Me in October of 1963. Jimmy Norman added more lyrics, and in 1964 a few months before the Stones‘ release, R&B singer Irma Thomas released the song, as a B-side to her Imperial single Anyone Who Knows what Love Is (Will Understand), which peaked at #52 on both the R&B charts and Billboards Top 100.
