A few days ago we commissioned our Kearns horizontal borer. We estimate the date of it to be around 1946, just after the war ended. It really is a pleasure to have such a large machine that is in such great shape. It took only 2 hours to get her up and running again, and the machine is still accurate, this is further helped with the modern digital readouts that are fitted. You may ask why we bought such an old machine. First there is the fact it is built very heavily and can take a lot of punishment. There is a beauty in using a machine from a bygone (and wartorn) era to make professional instrumentation for modern scientists. The truth is a CNC of this size would cost a fortune and we do not need to automate a machine that is making single custom pieces. Any savings we make of course filter down to our customers in the form of lower prices. The video is a compilation of clips from testing various parts of the machine after checking, greasing, etc.
