A few days ago, while at school, my four year old son was playing like the good little boy he is. As his teacher put it, another student wanted to tell him something and my son said to the other child that did not want to listen. The student persisted several times and eventually was within inches of my sons face. My son struck the child in the side of the head with a heel palm and the child fell over and struck his head on a fish aquarium. My son fetched an ice pack for him and made sure he was ok. The principal insisted on having a word with me and I was happy to do so. She said the school policy was no hitting whatsoever. I told her that I would never tell my son that there were no instances where reciprocal violence was not an unacceptable choice. I also stated that I thought he acted appropriately. She looked at me an nodded as if I were one of her students and said that we needed to work on presenting my son with consistency at home and at school. I told her that was fine, but in order to do so they would have to work on explaining the difference between defending oneself and one’s space and assault/bullying. Furthermore, I stated that if the other child’s behavior had been observed before the perceived assault, he should have been discipled. I then illustrated “the rule” that applies at our home, which is that if someone is playing with you in a manner you don’t like or is saying mean things to you, go play with someone else. If they I like what this women said !!!!!!!!
