A few facts about Greyfriars Presbyterian Church: 1) The church is important to the Scottish, Portuguese and African communities as part of Trinidad’s heritage. The first public meeting of the Trinidad Auxiliary Anti-Slavery Society was held at Greyfriars Church. 2) The site chosen was on Frederick Street at a part known then as the Cabildo School, adjacent to Brunswick (now Woodford) Square. The site was bought from the Cabildo (town council) for £300, and the foundation stone was laid on 10th April 1937. The church was completed at a cost of £4,858 and opened to the public on 21st January 1838. The interior was decorated by special lamps that were fueled by whale oil. 3) In recent times a dwindling congregation in Greyfriars has forced the Presbyterian Ministry to concentrate their revenue on St. Ann’s Church on Charlotte Street, which has recently been restored. The decision to sell has seriously divided the Presbyterian community. These include the relatives of the three young children that are buried on this site. The graves are still present there today.
