A few films I’ve seen recently: - Locke – slightly different than your average film. All of the action takes place “off screen” and the movie is confined to the space of one character making a journey in his car (other characters come into play via phone calls). The drama unfolds from start to finish via this sole set-up. It definitely won’t be everybody’s cup of tea and it isn’t the type of film I’d watch again but I do enjoy a film that dares to be different. Anything that refuses to tread the beaten track automatically receives extra credit from me. A great performance from Tom Hardy too. It takes a big performance to pull this type of role off effectively. 7 out of 10. Calvary – latest film from John Michael McDonaugh (writer and director of The Guard – outstanding film). Brendan Gleeson is as brilliant as ever as a troubled priest who has his life threatened by an unknown assailant (although he alludes to knowing the person in question, it isn’t made known until the big reveal at the climax). What I really enjoyed about this film is the quirky and eccentric characters, deftly created by McDonaugh. The dialogue is brilliantly written too. I’m a big fan of interesting characters and a slick script, and this delivers on both counts. I wasn’t 100% happy with the ending but it doesn’t take away from a great film overall. 8 out of 10. Lone Survivor – based on the true story of a Navy Seal operation during the war in Afghanistan. Some of the action scenes are truly out of this world. If you’re a fan of war films or just action films in general, there is an abundance of stuff in this movie to keep you entertained. The fact that so much of it is accurate (a lot of “based on a true story” films are usually far from actual events) just adds to the tension and it draws you in and holds your attention for the 2 hour duration. I’m not usually a massive fan of these type of films but this is definitely the exception. 8 out of 10.
