A few minutes ago, Christie Venter and I got back from a brief - TopicsExpress

A few minutes ago, Christie Venter and I got back from a brief trip to Depoe Bay, where I was anxious to take a walk and enjoy the beautiful weather were having this week. We drove to the town itself, then turned around and started back, with a detour into Rocky Creek park. Its a beautiful park, with a large grassy area that looks out over the ocean. As we got out of our car and started toward the trail, a park ranger asked us if we were there to see the whales, then pointed out to the water where there were lines of white on the surface. The whales, she said, were just our side of the furthest of those white lines of foam. We walked along the trail until we reached a bench that looks down over rocks, where waves crash against the shore at the base of the cliff where the grassy area is located. As we walked, I could hear a sound like wind blowing over the open mouth of a jug, which I havent heard there before. I figure it was sounds the whales were making. When we sat, it was a while before we saw any sign of whales, but then we saw the first sprays out in the distance, followed by whale backs and then tails. We saw them several times, and I finally had the presence of mind to snap a few shots with my phones camera, but I didnt figure Id be able to see much in any snapshots and I was right (I can see the whale, but it just looks like a sliver of black against the water, in the image). In any event, it was a nice treat to finally see whales, if only at a distance. Id never seen whales before, except in nature documentaries and such, so now I can cross that off the list. Not bad for a spur-of-the-moment drive. If only I had brought my actual camera like I almost did, Id have something to show for it besides good memories. Still, those memories suit me just fine as a consolation prize!
