A few minutes ago I returned from a grocery run and began shoving the purchased goods into my kitchen cabinets, when I was startled by the sight of a bear passing by, just outside the window. I inadvertently, in my haste to get to the window and follow the bears progress, kicked over a metal box that was temporarily stationed on the floor just under that window. The bear evidently heard the sound of that, turned, stood up, and peered though the window into my kitchen to investigate. What the bear discovered was my face peering back, a mere 6 to 8 inches away. It was the most tense 8-second staring contest that Ive ever experienced. The good news: I won! The bear broke off the stare, got back down on all fours, and calmly resumed its journey. I, on the other hand, had to take a seat for a few minutes before continuing with the grocery stowage.
