A few months ago, Abigail got a UTI. She gets these all of the time. It was after 5 pm and the pediatricians offices were closed. Abigail is seven, not potty trained, nonverbal, intellectually disabled, autistic and that night, in pain. I decided I had to take her to urgent care because I wanted to get her medical attention sooner rather than later. I went to Holzer Clinic and both locations turned her away because of her disability. Due to the severity of her autism, she can not provide a urine sample and therefore they would not see her. She gets these all the time and her pediatrician never puts her through the hassle of getting a sample. After she was better, I filed a complaint at the clinic. Two months later, they call me to give me their resolution. They said she is not welcome in their urgent cares for her UTI issues. In fact, told me to not bring her back in. And then told me that I really need to take her somewhere where the staff was well trained to handle autistic children like Nationwide Childrens ER in Columbus. I am beyond pissed of at this situation. This is why I advocate so hard every day of my life. This is a prime example of the way health care providers treat those with disabilities. Get a little compassion and a lot of training please. Our lives are hard enough, all we want is our children to be treated fairly. Its not that much to ask.
