A few months ago, my parents gave Ajay their old, deactivated flip phone. He has been toting it around, making sure to charge it when needed, taking photos at social events, checking the time when someone asks, and complaining of lack of service when were underground. In the past couple of days, hes been talking about getting a chip so that he can make phone calls. (No idea where he picked up this chip concept.) Ive told him that hes not old enough to have a working cell phone. He counters with Ill earn the money and buy the chip myself. It costs more than just buying a chip. You have to pay a monthly fee to the phone people. Thats okay! No, its not. Amma, I NEED a chip. Hes obsessed with The Chip. Last night, as I was tucking him in and giving him a goodnight hug and kiss, he pulled me close and whispered in my ear, Amma, I really REALLY want a chip. I whispered back No, kanna. Thats my final answer. He whispered his response, Thats okay. Ill just ask Santa for one. (Does Verizon ask its customers if they still believe in Santa? Does that disqualify someone from getting a chip?)
