A few months back I gave the twins my copy of the Upanishads. They were studying world religions, and it didnt seem to me that their teacher--who was teaching the students to say Boody-ism-- had a very firm grasp on the East. My copy is filled with notes from college and is literally chewed to pieces from the time when a roommates dog sought enlightenment, but I never replaced it and knew exactly where to find it, right by my copies of the Tao Te Ching and the writings of Zhuangzi, all of which were purchased for a comparative religion class I took as an undergraduate at Rhodes with Professor Mark W. Muesse, who recently announced his imminent departure from the Facebook community. I wanted to share this note before he moves on, and to thank/accuse him publicly for one of the most fun and influential classes I ever took. Id have to write my own Mahabharata to list the the hows and wherefores. Best to say that, if all of these books are careworn, its because they became required reading for every other class I ever took, whether it was a history course, a poetry class, science, or set design. I dont have too many sacred texts in my life except for the occasional Talking Heads song. But these artifacts, now passed down to my children, with a variation of this same story about the unexpected differences great teachers can make in your life, have been good companions. So college accomplished, right? Im blaming, and shaming, and Im spilling one on the ground for your Facebook account Mark. You helped me stop making sense. youtu.be/o7pVjl4Rrtc
