A few months back I was asked to be on the Indspire Awards to sing - TopicsExpress

A few months back I was asked to be on the Indspire Awards to sing a song at the end. Which would be covered by 2 broadcasting stations. My father asked if the event was sponsored by the extractive industry and was told the sponsors had no presence on their stage or have influence on the show. My dad thought this meant that they were not sponsored by the extractive industry and agreed that I would sing. Eventually, after 2 more inquiries about their sponsorship by my dad and mom, they finally disclosed they were sponsored by extractive industries. In light of this news and after much thought and discussion with other people this is the letter I sent to them... I am an advocate of Indigenous rights, sustainable practices, and active support of the natural integrity of our environment. It is my wish to continue vocalizing injustices and concerns on behalf of my future. I cannot consciously associate myself with an event directly connected to/sponsored by the same extractive industry that has forcibly imposed their destructive practices onto the Indigenous community and environment, causing negative, genocidal and environmental after effects. As I stand, rooted within the activism community, I stand on a comprehensive, common ground of action of which I may voice the truth of humanity. However, that message can become blocked by hypocritical actions contradicting the words of environmentalism I have spoken/known about since I was a little girl. Willing compliance to an event sponsored by the oil, gas, and mining industry would amount to hypocritical actions on my part. I am honoured to have been invited to sing, yet I will politely decline due to my continued implementation of my own political and moral perspectives of integrity, resistance, and rightful judgement. In sincerest apologies, sorry, :( ~TaKaiya Anne and Del Blaney, TaKaiyas parents P.S. I would be interested in other events in the future if not sponsored by oil, gas, or mining industries. _______________________________________________ Feedback would be great from my friends.
