A few nights ago, Linda Reed, and I were sitting around shelling white Crowder peas for the freezer. It reminded me of when I was a kid, when about this time of year; Mother, and couple of my sisters and I, would sit on the front porch shelling; black-eyed peas, butter beans, pole beans, bunch beans and probably a bunch of other kinds of peas and beans that I have forgotten. We didnt have a freezer, but Mother would can almost anything to help get our relatively large family through the long winters. Since we didnt have air-conditioning, or maybe not even electricity, it was normally too hot in the house anyway, so we all participated in bean-shelling. My older sister, Pearl, would entertain us by reciting poetry, or telling us stories from her school studies. One of my favorite stories was The Legend Sleepy Hollow, by Washington Irving. Because we would all beg her, Pearl told us the story so many times we could almost recite it ourselves, but it was so much better hearing my sister tell it. Over the years, every time I happen to be shelling peas or beans, I remember those wonderful evenings; watching the lightening bugs wink across the field, and listening to my sister recite that story.
