A few of you may be aware that I entered a competition where I had to write about a DJ who inspired my love of dance music. I wrote about Nick Warren for the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) competition... And just won two tickets for the Vegas event. This is what I wrote: Waaaaay back in 1997, there was a shonky little music store on the Isle of Wight in England that sold lots of vinyl and cassette tapes... yeah, THAT long ago. I cant remember why I picked up the tape, and I think it was just because of its deep and dark packaging, but I had never heard of the Global Underground series, or even of the DJ Nick Warren. Mixed Live In Prague the plastic cover proclaimed, and I took the tape out and placed it in my walkman. Thats right, kids - once upon a time there were devices that we used to play CASSETTE tapes on the go. They would play 45 minutes each side, and youd have to turn them over to listen to the other side, and even change the tapes to listen to the other half of the set. Primitive, huh? Suddenly, as I walked, I found my ears being filled with the sounds of Cruzeman, The Coffee Boys, Distant Drums, Energy 52 (remember them?), and a duo called Nalin & Kane, who I still adore to this day. Progressive house, trance, techno, call it what you will, but it filled my mind and my heart with a force I had never experienced. It was unlike anything I had ever heard. This single cassette (OK, two cassettes) changed my whole outlook on music. I have traveled all over the world to see DJs that I admire and enjoy, and been to many foreign countries just to lose it in the middle of a throng of like-minded people with our hands raised and our heads nodding. The music connects us like nothing else in this world can do. Ive made friends... fantastic friends... everywhere, and often meet up with them again and again to attend festivals or clubs just to rekindle our love and immerse ourselves back into the sweating world of beats and bass. Ive danced in different countries. Ive danced on different continents. Ive danced in fields with 200,000 people. Ive danced in dingy little clubs with sweat on the walls and people lying on the floor. Ive danced in houses of people whos name I will never know. Ive danced and hugged and loved people that I will never see again. Ive danced through love. Ive danced through loss. But I have always danced. And all because of an impulse buy in a now non-existant record shop. Thank you, Nick Warren. Thank you for the longest love affair I have ever known.
