A few personal observations of family churches... 1. They typically dont like outsiders. 2. If you are an outsider, you must think like the family in order to be accepted. 3. Legitimate growth challenges the authority of the family. 4. As a preacher, if you are to gain influence, you must win the approval of the family patriarchs or matriarchs or grow the church beyond the family. Both or equally difficult and time consuming. 5. Most of the time, the children and grandchildren of the leaders of the family are discontent with the family church structure. 6. If the children and grandchildren are still members of the family church, most of the time they have an overwhelming desire to attend somewhere else. 7. The family church values the future of the family more than they do the future of the church. 8. Most family churches believe that the church is preserved by keeping authority in the hands of their family. Therefore, when a leader of the family dies, they pass responsibility on to other family members. Do you have any observations to add to the list?
