A few random facts I learned this week in Urban Anthropology: 1. The red hair and pale skin that Ireland is known for comes from the Vikings interbreeding with Dubliners in the 9th and 10th centuries. 2. The differences in East Coast and West Coast rap of the 80s and 90s breaks down to population density. New York=living close together, music focus on the group, LA=living spread apart, music focus on the individual. 3. The city known as Troy was built and destroyed 9 times in a period of 3500 years. Scholars are not even sure that it is the correct Troy of the Trojan War legend or if the Trojan War even ever happened. 4. Jazz began in New Orleans because Louisiana law said that there must be a brass band in every city to maintain morale. This gave former slaves and Creoles greater access to brass instruments than in other places. When jazz grew in popularity, it moved up the river to Memphis, St. Louis and Chicago. 5. The invention of the night club in the 1920s made going to bars acceptable for all members of society. Before this, only the shadiest of characters were to be found in bars.
