A few weeks ago I mentioned that there is a new project I am working on; and, while it is far from completion (or actual launch), I am excited to announce a new venture. GRAPE Strategies will focus on finding, organizing, training, and working alongside public education advocates across the country as we fight to maintain the integrity of, and strengthen our public schools. GRAPE has two meanings; one is in its use as an acronym, standing for Grassroots Research & Advocacy for Public Education. The other is more symbolic, and dates back to a conversation I once had with a local reformer, who referred to students as grapes on the end of a vine: we prepare the soil, plant the vine, support it throughout its growth, and grow and enjoy our grapes. Much is the same in education: we create the conditions for a strong education system, support it as it grows and adapts, and enjoy the success of the students that are its products. Many, many more details are coming soon, but I look forward to getting started on this project and seeing where it leads. Stay tuned!
