A few weeks ago, Pinnacles staff and park volunteers got the opportunity to leave the park and learn about the parks non-lead outreach program first hand! For some, this was their first time handling a firearm, and the day included a brief hunters safety course, a demonstration of lead vs. non-lead ammunition, and time on the range to try out the ammunition for themselves. Non-lead outreach is an important part of the parks condor recovery program. Condors are scavengers who eat carcasses and decomposing flesh, and when that flesh contains the fragments of lead bullets, the birds can fall sick and die. Talking to visitors about the switch from lead to non-lead ammunition in California and nation-wide is an important part of the job of Pinnacles staff. Check out huntingwithnonlead.org/ for more information on non-lead amo and hunting!
