A few weeks ago we took the second cutting off the back field. The grass is rebounding quickly due to the warm weather and rain. I dont know if there will be the opportunity for a third. Along the edges of the wind breaks the early maples and a few locust trees are just starting to show the first hints of color. The air seems a little crisper in the morning as I take my walk out to the higher pasture and back pond. Overhead there has been a constant parade of turkey vultures and hawks drifting South along the flyway. All our spring/summer birds have pretty much vanished. The swallows no longer patrol the garden and pond. The calling of the red wing blackbirds is silent. Soon the high flying formations of geese will begin. As I worked in the garden this afternoon dozens of Monarch butterflies lazily floated around me. Over the past years I have seeded several acres of our lower wetlands that border the creeksides with milk weed plants for them. I hope they stop, rest and take some nourishment for their long journey south. Im surprised the humming birds are hanging in so long but in reality there are still lots of flowers for them. This spring and summer have flown by. I almost feel that Ive missed them, lost in the flurry of work and outside projects. There are so many things still on the list I fear will have to wait another year, new ground to break, raised beds to build, the greenhouses that need to be raised, its a long list. But now is the time of harvest, canning and preparing for the cold days to come. Fall is my favorite season. Theres so much too attend to, work and play, firewood and festivals. The lure of the brilliant painted foliage brings out my inner nomad and tempts me north to follow the color from beginning to end. Right now my only immediate goal is to secure the first batch of apple cider donuts of the season. That for me is the first sure set marker of the fall. Fall..then winter. Dickens was right...It is the best of times, it is the worst of times.
