A few words from Time Out New Yorks Keith Uhlich on my favorite film of 2014: The Immigrant is a bleak story (even Darius Khondjis strikingly sepia cinematography seems infected by incurable gloom) about humanitys failed promise and the nagging, futile desire to make things right in spite of the world we live in. ...[The filmmakers] straight A to B narrative classicism...seems out of vogue, at least as far as the current American cinema is concerned, in its slow-build patience and delicacy. I often found myself second-guessing the film, questioning how, and if, it would all come together, even as all the elements casually, masterfully accumulated and coalesced, building to as pure a powerhouse of a climax as Ive ever experienced. I wont soon forget the storm of emotion that overcame me upon the films sublime final fade-out: The shock of the old made new, a miracle achieved, a great movie rising before me—like a delusion, like a dream. Yes, its that good!
