A few words on the human side of this massive decision our country - TopicsExpress

A few words on the human side of this massive decision our country is about to make. Ive been asked to share it by a few people so here goes... My country is strong in its national pride, But we witness now, this great divide, As we hurtle towards referendum day, What will it really mean to walk away? Both sides have their predictions of bust or boom, Of unconvincing prosperity or impending doom, A nation that had solidarity if nothing besides, Is now torn through the heart as the people decide. As politicians debate about currency and oil, And nuclear disarming vs economic turmoil, It feels we are ignoring the lessons of the past, And the fact separation has a human impact. Now Im not looking to sensationalise or liken our cause, To humanitarian injustices so grievously flawed, But I do think us ignorant if we dont take note, Of what has gone before, before we vote. In November 89 we saw the triumphant fall, In a re-unified Germany of the Berlin Wall, And the repeal of Apartheid came shortly thereafter, And the welcome reversal of a separation disaster. When Martin Luther King spoke of his dream, Of an inclusive society and abolished regime, No one could deny what he did for that nation, In leading the way to comprehensive integration. Reflecting on these events- can anyone doubt? That besides all the things we will go without, We cannot be blind, our world history is blighted, With stories of suffering where we dont stand united. So to my fellow scots I make this appeal, When you are considering both sides of the deal, Our people are the source of our national pride, Let us show wisdom, and courage, and stay unified. Proud to be Scottish, delighted to be United
