A few years ago I had the life changing experience of traveling through the Arctic on a 300 Russian ice breaking vessel with a team of scientists from the Canadian Museum of Nature. For three weeks we traveled up the Eastern Coast of the Canadian Arctic, explored Baffin Island, crossed the Davis Strait to Greenland and then made our way up the mind blowing Sondrestrom Fjord. We ended the trip with a visit to the the Greenland Ice Sheet watching enormous glaciers collapse in into the ocean. We saw polar bears, seals, whales, birds of every kind, wildlife in absolute abundance. It was some of the most beautiful scenery and light I have ever seen in my life. Although it was a experience of a lifetime, it was also an experience that frightened me. Seeing miles and miles of glaciers disappearing in such a short amount of time was unfathomable. We would arrive in a yet another, self proclaimed, most beautiful place I have ever seen in my life take it in and then look at photographs of the same location from years earlier that was full of glaciers which have since vanished. To see first hand such massive amounts of ice and wildlife habitat disappearing so quickly was unbelievable. It all seems so far away and other worldly as I sit here in the comfort of my home with modern luxuries, running water, electricity and the thought that I am part of the problem and the solution. This planet is a magical place, lets do our best to take care of it and all of the wild creatures that call it home. #ActOnClimate Music by @toddhannigan and #brotherynstudios #ActOnClimate #CanadianMueseumOfNature #StudentsOnice #ClimateChange #Arctic #Baffin #Science #Canada #HabitatSeven #TheOutbound #justinbastien #travel @patagonia
