A few years ago, I had the strange pleasure of working for a then Commissioner on the police oversight commission. I remember him telling me how useless and unjust the system was (4 plus years ago). They had no real authority or decision making ability. He talked about resigning due to frustration and the brutality of force in this community. I saw enough to make me sick. You shrug and hope it gets better one day. But what does it take? How many deaths and nationally recognized embarrassments? (Wild west!) It is a known fact our officers are not aptly trained, they are not psychologists, but are dealing with ridiculous numbers of nuisance calls due to drug epidemics, meth, heroin, bustling through this town like the Rio Grande. Its a hub that targets all ages. Generation to generation, only growing worse. The daily stress of not knowing takes its toll on patrol. Our economy does not allow us to provide the elite for a job that kind of requires an elite force, a healthy, well trained, smart force. Mental illness in the natural state, coupled with outrageous equations in drug use, mafia and cartel presence, drug runnners and seekers creates havoc and in our case, a fort of tyranny in many realms. Paranoia on all ends. It is a lose lose situation. There is no governance while there is over governance in all the wrong aspects, excuses and talk. Lets not forget that many of our own law enforcement agents are drinking too much, and in some cases dabbling. You know what I mean... truth! In any case, the resignation of half of the current oversight commission is not a surprise to me. Its a commission without teeth and at best a committee assigned by the City, the same entity that pays its officers and Chief. All tied in. At some point, I hope the DOJ will infiltrate this system as much as Im not a fan of over governance, enough is enough. Our jail system is a money making private, corporate paid machine, probation/parole are bonusd for the number of revolving doors they can create for that machine. At the end of the day, youtube Albuquerque COPs and ask yourself, what you gonna do when they come for you? Bad boys. Its all relative, but we sit idly by and shrug. What ya gonna do?
