A few years ago I was fortunate enough to attend the Crossfit affiliate festival in Miami. Over the weekend numerous athletes and Top guns spoke to the crowd. Even Coach Glassman gave us a few words from the heart. The lecture I enjoyed the most was from Tony Blauer from Crossfit tactical. Coach Blauer spoke of the essential skill set needed by all of us. The first was general physical preparedness or GPP. The second was being able to swim. The third was the ability to defend yourself. The GPP is what you get with Crossfit and the goal is health and wellness. Basically avoiding the health care system. Even if you dont like the water, being able to prevent drowning or help someone who may be is important. Props to Dan Castillo last summer! The last one is often lost in the mix ,but can be as important as any. Coach went on to say that lacking in any of the three skills can take years from your life. Sounds like as good a reason as any to me. We dont have a pool here at Crossfit Franklin, but we certainly have the other two. What I would like to point out is we now have two classes a week that focus on the self defense side. Your head coach Lee Soares has been running a fighting class here for over a year and this week kicks off Strike with coach Eric Cussan. Both classes are geared toward not only the self defense side , but to a few other elements often missed in the typical Crossfit programming. These include not only unilateral movements but rotational elements as well. As far as coaches in the area go, both Lee and Eric are second to none in the areas I spoke about. Coach Lees background in Martial Arts and security work span more than 25 years. Coach Eric is a professional MMA fighter, Franklin police officer and member of the Norfolk County S.W.A.T. team. I encourage all of our athletes here to get into their classes and finish up on that skill set. No prior experience is needed, just be willing to learn. Wednesday nights at 6pm Strike with Coach Eric, and Saturday mornings at 9am join Fight club with Coach Lee.
