A few years ago Pie was my date to a girls night/birthday event for one of my old coworkers. The whole thing had a crazy bachelorette party feel and by the time we showed up everyone (who had participated in lots of day drinking) seemed to be getting ready to call it a night and head home. The only people left to clean up the party were Pie, the birthday girl and myself. Keep in mind that Penina had just met this person and she still opted to hang around to clean and share some birthday love, because thats how she rolled. Anyway, part of the decor consisted of these gaudy, oversized fake diamonds that looked like something from a set on The Goonies. We felt weird about throwing them away so we tossed a giant bag of them in the trunk and headed to Magics to go night swimming (which we did almost once a week during the summer of 2010). While we were sitting on the beach at midnight we discussed being little and trying to dig our way to China and all of the other awesome things we did on our family beach days growing up. This sparked the idea that we should take all of the leftover gems from the party and bury them along the beach that night. We spent a good hour digging separate holes to hide them and scattering the jewels on the sand. The chances were slim, but we considered how we could have possibly been planting seeds of amazing beach adventure memories for some random kids and that single idea left us practically bursting with our own happiness. That hour of my life was probably one of the fondest memories I have of her. Every time I go to Magics I think of that night, I think about her laughing and chucking plastic treasure along the beach as she skipped through the sand pretending to be some kind of Polynesian tooth fairy. I think of how incredibly lucky I was to have a moment like that, and how hopefully Penina enjoyed it as much as I did.
