A few years ago, the go-to word people used to describe online writers was narcissist. If you dared to use your little life as a springboard to talk about Life, you were labeled a narcissist again and again. I read that world written about me so many times that I finally sat down with my therapist and said, Tell me the truth! Am I a narcissist? Is that what you have written in those notes about me? And she breathed her patient breath and said, No, Glennon. You are not a narcissist. But you ARE maybe a little neurotic. Huh, I said. Tell me about that. She explained that a lot went into these definitions but for our purposes, we could think of a narcissist as someone who thinks that shes perfect - so everything that goes wrong must automatically be someone elses fault. A neurotic assumes that everything that goes wrong is her own fault. She said, Lets say you send an email and the other person doesnt respond. If you decide that person didnt respond because shes is a complete jerk - thats narcissistic. If you decide she didnt respond because youre a complete jerk, thats neurotic. They are both highly egotistical ways to live, but theyre quite different. I felt relieved. If youre gonna be all jacked up, neurotic seemed a sweeter way to be all jacked up. SEEEEE - I AM ALL JACKED UP SWEETLY. I KNEW it. But only a neurotic knows how exhausting it is to be neurotic. Its just EXHAUSTING. Anyway, Im having a hard day today and this essay by my friend Jessica helped. I would like to dedicate it to all my Sister Neurotics out there. Its not always our fault. Sometimes it their fault and sometimes its nobodys fault and even when it IS our fault, its okay. We can say sorry and forgive ourselves and start over right away. Making a mistake is not the end of the world. Love You, G tenthousandplaces.org/2014/11/27/things-ive-been-wrong-about-for-most-of-my-life-part-one/
