A film shoot is really an eclipse. Its an alignment of people from all creative backgrounds who come together for a short while to make something (hopefully) spectacular. But this can only happen if they ultimately want it to. As a filmmaker who has put out a number of films and has met and worked with, for better or for worse, hundreds of cast and crew members, EXCUSES, not reasons, are distributed more than the indie films I strive to make. Its the famous I cant make it because... 1. Ive got a birthday. 2. Ive got a doctors appointment. 3. Ive got a wedding. 4. Ive get a Communion. 5. Ive got a Confirmation. 6. Ive got to (help a friend) move. 7. My car broke down. 8. The bus/train/subway (you name it). 9. I thought it was next Saturday (any other day). 10. I thought it was next month (any other month). 11. I thought it was this time (any other time). 12. Didnt you get my text/email/Facebook message (anything other than a proper phone call)? 13. I have a vacation planned for months. 14. I have a concert planned for months. 15. (you name it) ---------- I understand that things happen, however, they cannot possibly happen all of the time at such (in)convenient times. Dont want to be a part of something you originally agreed to? Be honest, and simply say No thanks. And none of this text/email shit! Call! Phones were designed for just that! Be a man, be a woman, be a professional and call! Calendars are everywhere, so theres no reason not to know what youre doing in your life. Sure, you might be spontaneous and schedules do change last minute, but where I begin to scratch my head is when I receive 5, 10, 15, 20 calls from cast/crew saying any of the above, whether leading to to an audition or an actual shoot (if it makes it there). How did I get sooo lucky to meet 5, 10, 15, 20 people who all had birthday parties, weddings, whatever? Cant all be true! I am intensely observational and my detective skills are sharp. And a little secret (not so much now that i mention it) experiment I employed a short while ago proves ALL of my theories. Just do it, or dont! Otherwise, youre standing in my way and in front of the person who truly wants to be a part of it all!
