A final thought on communism. There are very few things that Ive concluded are unambiguously horrible. Communism is one of them. The countries who tried it wound up with a legacy of repression, poverty, famine, and genocide on a scale unsurpassed in modern history. Communism no longer deserves to be defended, much less considered as a future alternative in any capacity. A hundred million people died to confirm this statement, not to mention the billions who were consigned to lives of poverty by the faulty economic visions of Marx, Lenin, and others. But the further we get from these atrocities, the more we tend to forget them, and be drawn in by the rhetoric once again. We owe it to the dead NOT to let this happen. And for those who feel the need to defend communism because they espouse Western forms of socialism... Yes, communism is an extreme version of socialism. But you have no obligation to defend it, any more than a moderate Muslim should feel the need to defend radical Islamists, or an advocate of capitalism should defend crony capitalism. So please, lets do our progeny a favor, and dissuade them from embracing Marxs romantic visions of class warfare, before yet another leader thinks he can make it work, and millions more have to die to prove he cant.
