A final (unless I think of something else to say) on Twelve Angry - TopicsExpress

A final (unless I think of something else to say) on Twelve Angry Men. This was an hour and forty minutes of twelve men in a room encountering bigotry, hatred, selfishness, anger, and stress and yet there was not a single profanity spoken. Maybe this is because this was originally a TV show on Playhouse 90, or not. This was kind of refreshing to see that someone could convey emotions in this way. Contrast this to my last play, Other People’s Money and the difference is striking. In OPM some of the language was embarrassing, thereby rendering it unacceptable for younger audiences and limiting itself at the box-office. And all such language was gratuitous. The story could have been told just as effectively without it. And, before anyone gets on my case I am not advocating that all plays should be “G” rated. There is a difference in using language to effectively sell the characters and the atmosphere. It’s just not right to use it just because you can. The language we have is powerful enough to convey any emotion and situation, and I wish some people who claim to writers, who claim to have command of the language use it in a better fashion.
