A flood watch has been posted for Cheshire and Hillsborough - TopicsExpress

A flood watch has been posted for Cheshire and Hillsborough counties in southern New Hampshire but is mainly for the town of Peterborough and is in effect until Friday Afternoon. This flood watch has been posted because of the risk of minor flooding due to ice jams in the Contoocook River. Officials from the Town of Peterborough and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have noted a rapid increase in the amount of river ice within the Contoocook River in the town of Peterborough, which has resulted in water flow being constricted through the river channel. Temperatures are forecasted to remain well below freezing tonight through Friday morning. As a result, additional river ice is expected to form within the river. There is a possibility that this rapid development of river ice may prompt minor flooding along the Contoocook River in Peterborough and locations further upstream. People who live near the Contoocook River, like those at the Riverview Apartments in Peterborough, should monitor for any rising water. If flooding occurs or a flood warning is posted, you should move to high grounds and stay away from the river. Some roads, especially US Route 202 may have a chance for flooding so be alert for road closures and always make sure you follow the rule for if you encounter a flooded road, Turn Around, Dont Drown. -CH
