A followup to last weeks introduction of Glaucoma awareness TYPES OF GLAUCOMA.... There are different types of glaucoma. The most common type of glaucoma is called open angle glaucoma and does not produce any ocular symptoms until advanced vision loss is present. At a comprehensive eye exam with ones optometrist certain screening procedures are done to detect and screen for glaucoma. Further testing may be ordered if the doctor feels there is suspicion of glaucoma. There are higher risk groups that one should be aware of to see if they fall into that category. They are: age of 60 or greater, family members that have been diagnosed with glaucoma, diabetics, very near sighted people, and African Americans. It is very important that one has their yearly comprehensive eye exam especially if they fall within one of the high risk groups.
