A forgotten hero? My old pal Patrick Mulligan lived in Downing st Epping for many years. I first had contact with him in 1979 when walking home from school. A mate of mine and I would pluck the petals of his prized rose bushes and one afternoon chased us down Dent St calling us all sorts of names. Later that week I decided to offer an apology and he was very welcoming of that. Many afternoons I would see him pottering around in his garage playing with an old WWII radio receiver and spent many hours listening to his stories about his time serving in New Guinea as a radio operator during the war. He had many items that he brought back including a Japanese sword from his time fighting? in Japan, amongst other military type items. He owned a silver LC Torana that I often saw at Carlingford court when he did his shopping, and was always proud to say that he purchased it new. He spent some considerable time making a large brass commemorative display, I cant remember what is was or its significance, but he his standing next to it in the photo. If i recall, it was given to the army museum in Canberra. He was a lovely man but as I grew older and discovered cars and girls, I didnt get to see him all that often. He and his wife had no children, only some distant relatives and he passed away in 1993. No one collected his ashes and there is no headstone.
