A form of society that does not invest in what it takes to keep that form of society alive — that form of society will surely die. We are veering near the phase boundary that marks the last gasp of the Democratic Enlightenment. Across that gap lies the regime of Total Corporate Feudalism. There may be time to veer off — I don’t know. There is at least one precedent for the Most Enlightened doing most of the steering, but more often than not it is the Most Miserable who are forced to rise up and take the wheel. That doesn’t always turn out so well. The great majority of academics I know are very fine people but I have to be honest — most of them have their heads too far up their careers to see what’s coming.
