A former KH-UIA World Chairman (1989-1998), Shlomo Hillel was born in Iraq and came on aliyah with his family in 1933. After the 1948 War of Independence, he returned to Iraq to lead clandestine Zionist activities and lay the groundwork for the massive immigration of the Jews to Israel. Before joining KH, he had a long diplomatic and political career, serving as ambassador, minister, parliamentarian and Speaker of the Knesset. He received the Yakir Keren Hayesod Award in 1998.
