A free piece of advice. Inspite of my very young practice of Architecture, Ive had my own frustrating share of Architect-Client misunderstandings, mostly resulting from unclear contract terms & negotiations between both parties; likewise for many other architects. And for some people, the misunderstandings evolve into irresolvable disagreement and becomes a formidable legal matter to be settled by lawyers and, possibly, the court system. For an avoidable occurence like that, its very shameful. To avoid future disagreements, prospective clients should endeavour to ask the Architect some very important questions regarding fee proposal. Questions such as this: 1. What engineering services are included and which are excluded? What about landscape design or other services? 2. What level of supervision is included during construction? Who gets to cover the fees? 3. Are interior design services included? If so, what exactly is included and what is excluded? 4. Does the architect understand the construction budget? What happens to the fee if the design does not meet the budget? 5. What if the architect’s design does not meet your expectations? Who pays for re-design? Those are the very basic questions that would save you from unnecessary future altercations with an Architect. If the answers you get are unsatisfactory, please feel very free to look elsewhere. Lastly, do not make the mistake of hiring an Architect who is not qualified. In an unregulated society like Nigeria, we have a whole lot of them out there, bringing shame to the noble profession of Architecture. Ive been hired to correct designs in the past. Do not pay twice. Good morning. And have a nice day.
